One of things I miss due to getting older and having chronic pain from injuries is actually DOING sports.
Most people wouldn’t know I was a big tomboy as a kid. I played everything. Baseball, football, went swimming, etc. with the neighborhood gang of boys. Not that there wasn’t any girls around, they just weren’t interested.
I would spend hours in the pool. Swimming, not just horsing around. I knew about every stroke and dove off the diving board. At Silver Lake one day I finally got up the nerve to go off the high dive. Scared the crap out of me because my form was off and the back of my calves smacked the water hard. Never did it again.
My parents thought I had great natural swimming strokes so they signed me up for lessons. I was way too shy then so quickly gave the lessons up.
Now I watch in awe of athletes. I still love watching football and tennis. The Olympics is always inspiring.
Connors and Agassi
I once got the chance to see Jimmy Connors and Andre Agassi in person play an exhibition game in Seattle. If you follow tennis, Connors was at the end of his career and Agassi a rising star. That was cool.
Someday I want to attend Wimbledon which is a bucket list type goal. Actually, any of the Grand Slams or all in the same year (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open comprise the four Grand Slams.)
I think I like tennis as you need to be physical and keep a tough mental focus. It also requires strategy and finess. It’s just you against the person across the net from you. Unfortunately, for me to play these days you need to hit the ball to me while I stand on the center line.
