Miles Before They Sleep

I have to thank a very good friend of mine for resending this to me today. I originally wrote this in 2001 and shared it on the first anniversary with a few people. I had really forgotten about it but my friend suggested I share it here.

I was thinking of all the first responders as they did their jobs during this devistating time.

Miles before I sleep, miles before I sleep.

Through anger and rage they keep going.

They keep hoping, caring, pressing on.

A job to do, like no other.

A job of their heart, not of their career.

A job of love, not of fear.

Fear can not rule their thoughts and some have lost
the fight because of that.

They move mountains, one square foot at a time.

Searching for signs of life to keep them going.

Miles before they sleep.

Miles before they sleep.
